The shape of the glass globe and surrounding cage make the lantern very sturdy. When made of brass they resist the harsh coastal New England weather. First used as colonial era lighting in the 1800's, Onion Lanterns were designed as a light to burn whale oil, and were used by nautical shipping companies and railroads. The two newest exhibits by Munro, Gone Fishing and Fireflies, were unveiled on May 19, 2023, and can be found in a small valley adjacent to Light Towers, adding another half-acre to the exhibit. The adjacent Light Towers celebrates Paso Robles’ extensive wine country environs, featuring 69 towers composed of more than 17,000 wine bottles, illuminated with glowing optic fibers whose colors morph to an inspiring musical score. Field of Light is a multi-acre walk-through experience, Munro’s largest artwork in the world, recently expanded to more than 100,000 stemmed spheres lit by fiber optics, gently illuminating the landscape in subtle blooms of morphing color that describe the undulating landscape. Two electrodes are found in the salt water lamp, one acting as an anode, and one as a cathode, like you would find in a regular battery.
